Five Nakshatras in Kalighat Style.

This series brings back an unusual chapter from Kalighat painting history.
Inspired by a set of rare plates from the V&A Museum—created around 1890—we revisit the old artistic
experiment of giving human form to the stars. Here, we recreate five of the twenty-seven nakshatras—Rohini,
Jyeshtha, Shatabhisha, Dhanishtha, and Uttara Bhadrapada—in a contemporary take on the Kalighat style. The
works keep the spirit of the originals while opening them up to today’s viewers.
In Indian cosmology, the sky is mapped through twelve zodiac signs (rashis) and twenty-seven nakshatras.
Each rashi contains three to four nakshatras, offering a finer layer of meaning and emotion. While the zodiac
gives a broader personality, the nakshatras bring in subtle qualities, symbols, and stories. This series explores
how those celestial ideas can be expressed through the bold lines and lively character of Kalighat art.

Uttara Bhadrapada : A calm ascetic seated on a stylised serpent or aquatic being. With a staff and lamp, she represents depth, steady strength, and inner light. Together, these five works offer a small window into a much larger cosmic system, showing how Kalighat art can transform astrology, mythology, and imagination into vivid, human stories.
