In days of yore, shields were highly valued objects of spiritual power, whose various decorations granted them mystical, protective qualities in battle …and life! The shield as a metaphor began long before the psalms were compiled; supposedly when God first told Abram ‘I am your shield’. My shields combine whiffs of ancient Indian mysticism and Indian urbanism, layered with stretched textures and goopy shino glazes, a nucleus of teal melted glass …and finally soda-fired with wood. The final look and result being a gift of fire! Try deciphering the imagery on them and build up your own stories. That’s how folklore is born!
