Gas Fired Stoneware

22” height x 9” width

set of 3

In days of yore, shields were highly valued objects of spiritual power, whose various decorations granted them mystical, protective qualities in battle …and life! The shield as a metaphor began long before the psalms were compiled; supposedly when God first told Abram ‘I am your shield’. My shields combine whiffs of ancient Indian mysticism and Indian urbanism, layered with stretched patterns and motifs, engraved using incising tools and finally fired in soda/wood/gas firings; the final look and result being a gift of fire! Try deciphering the imagery on them and build up your own stories. That’s how folklore is born!
